My husband insists that the Black Friday sales are full of crap no one wants or needs but I beg to differ. I've picked up some amazing deals on and around Black Friday over the years. The sales on the Friday after Thanksgiving differ from those throughout the rest of the year because retailers often have site-wide discount codes, meaning you can get some great deals on new-in pieces as well as the seasonal pieces. This is also one of the few times of year that staples such as Mulberry Bayswater handbags and Burberry check scarves are discounted too!
However there is so much to choose from on Black Friday and in the weeks leading up to it that it can feel overwhelming and you can end up with, to quote my partner, crap you don't need or even really want. That's why I like to prep for Black Friday as far in advance as possible.
One thing I do throughout the year is to keep an eye on certain pieces that I love and be aware of their original retail price. The reason for this is twofold - one, I know for a fact that I'm getting a great saving, because let's face it, sales labels can exaggerate. Two, it helps me avoid impulse purchases and encourages me to only shop for items that I truly love and have been thinking about for a long time, rather than buying something just because it's a bargain. (Remember, it's only a bargain if you wanted that item when it was full price!)
About a month before Black Friday, I like to head to the shops and get some ideas for what I might like to buy if it goes into the sale. This isn't really something I feel I can do properly online so sadly I won't be able to do it this year, but if you live somewhere where the shops are still open then I encourage you to go and have a look around your local shopping centre to see what new pieces they've got in and perhaps they'll go into the sale at the end of the month.
You can also use apps like Shoptagr to keep an eye on the pieces that you're hoping might end up discounted. This is a really handy tool to keep your wishlist in one place and get notified when something goes into the sale, or an out-of-stock item that you love comes back into stores. It's particularly handy around Black Friday when everyone's in shopping mode.
